Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry
A body composition (DEXA) scan provides a detailed analysis of your body’s composition, including muscle, fat, and bone. It offers valuable insights into overall health, fitness, and metabolic activity. Whether you’re seeking to understand your baseline, track changes over time, or optimize wellness strategies, a DEXA scan serves as a comprehensive tool for personalized health assessments.
All locations use Hologic Horizon W running APEX 3.6.
It is generally recommended that a patient stick with the same machine as they previously had their scan on. Though our machines are calibrated as closely as possible, no DEXA machines are entirely the same.
We recommend, if possible, to go to the same clinic that you’ve previously had your scan. We calibrated our machines the same way to ensure consistency throughout our clinics.
The scanner measures the grams of lean tissue, fat and bone in your body while producing an x-ray type image of your body. The technologists use this image to measure the fat and lean mass in each of your limbs as well as the torso.
We can compare lean mass in your arms or legs to check for symmetry, as having one limb with greater lean mass than the other can predispose you to injury. We can also check the percent fat of your abdomen to ensure that it is equal to or less than your total body fat. Carrying excess fat in the abdominal region is associated with increased risk of heart disease, diabetes and some cancers.
The scan is not diagnostic for arthritic changes, fractures or tumors – it is not the same as an x-ray that you would have taken of a broken bone.
While both scans utilize DEXA technology, the Body Composition Scan primarily evaluates an individual’s physique, focusing on factors such as body fat percentage, muscle distribution, and overall skeletal health to provide insights into personalized wellness. In contrast, the Bone Density Scan precisely targets bone mineral density in specific regions like the back and hips. By assessing bone health, emphasizing spine and hip density, and evaluating fracture risk, it takes a proactive approach to overall skeletal well-being, contributing significantly to musculoskeletal health.
A DEXA body composition scan is the gold standard in body fat testing. Skinfolds (calipers) and bioelectrical impedance, the tests commonly used in gyms, provide less accurate and less detailed information. We can provide you with the most accurate assessment of your body composition available.
While underwater weighing (UWW) was considered the most accurate method to assess percent body fat in the past, researchers, elite athletes and medical specialists have been using DEXA for more than 15 years. DEXA is a three compartment model, accounting for bone mass, lean mass and fat mass while UWW can only differentiate fat and non-fat tissue. Also, to obtain accurate values in UWW a subject’s residual lung volume must be measured. UWW requires a subject to sit very still on a scale while submersed underwater and to have expelled all the air form their lungs. The process is repeated three to ten times and the values are averaged. You can see why most clients prefer a DEXA scan over UWW measurements.
As everyone’s starting point is different and their training/diet changes can vary there is no ideal time for remeasurement for everyone. It is usual to wait from between 3 and 6 months between scans to see meaningful results. If in doubt about when it’s time to be retested, contact us and tell us about your fitness/dietary changes and we’ll help you decide when to get retested.
In small doses, there are no known negative side effects from x-rays. The radiation exposure in DEXA is one of the lowest for medical tests. If you have any concerns regarding the radiation exposure, please talk with the technologist before proceeding with your scan.
Yes. While we ask our clients to be free of metal for the scan, any metal that is non-removable will be consistent from scan to scan and will not greatly influence the results. Unlike an MRI where metal objects can interact with the scan process, the x-ray beams used in DEXA will be blocked by the metal object and so surrounding tissue will inaccurately be classified as bone, but it will be consistent from scan to scan.
While we get a value for the total bone mass in the body from a total body scan, it is not the ideal way of assessing fracture risk. Bodycomp Imaging offers bone density screening, where the hip and the spine are imaged in detail to assess your fracture risk. If you are interested in fracture assessment then contact us to discuss a bone density screening test.
A total body scan takes 7 minutes. While lying on the padded bed surface, the scanner arm makes a series of 7 passes over your body. The whole body image will be processed upon completion and your printouts will be provided to you at the time of your appointment. We book 45 minutes per client to allow for time to discuss the values. (Note: when scans are done in group format, the time per booking and the time to discuss the results will vary.)
While some of our clients are elite athletes and use our scan to tweak their training routine, the majority of our clients are average people. Some come to us for a baseline scan before embarking on a weight loss plan and then have follow-ups every three months to monitor their progress. Significant weight loss will usually result in some loss of lean tissue, but minimizing the amount of lean tissue lost and maximizing the amount of fat loss is ideal. Lean tissue is metabolically more active than fat so having a greater lean to fat ratio will result in an increased metabolic rate.
The DEXA total body scan is accurate to 300 grams. The fat and lean components are accurate to 500 grams. A whole body scan percent fat value has about a 98.5 percent accuracy.
- Bodycomp Scan – Two distinct x-ray energies pass through the tissues of the body and are blocked or attenuated relative to the density of the tissues they are penetrating. This allows the scanner to generate a map of the lean, fat and bone mineral content per pixel.
- Bone Density Scan – With an apparatus to help position the legs for scanning, the scanner scans in more detail at the hip(s) and lumbar spine areas.
The DEXA scan table has a weight limit of 450lbs. Unfortunately we are unable to scan clients who weigh more than this. The table top also has a length limit of 6’5”. In clients taller than 6’5” a portion of their head or feet will not be included in the scan area. However, these clients can still be scanned with good accuracy.
Please wear casual workout attire without zippers, studs, or snaps for the scan. We recommend removing watches and jewelry before the scan. For clients with metal on their clothing, we offer clean hospital-style scrubs to change into
We analyze your percentage of body fat in comparison to data from the American College of Sports Medicine, providing classifications such as too little fat, fitness, healthy, or obese. These classifications aim to indicate potential health risks associated with the quantity of body fat. We encourage clients to utilize their scan data for monitoring progress. Comparing a baseline scan with one taken three months later allows clients to assess the effectiveness of their workout and/or diet routines by observing changes in lean and fat tissue. It’s important to highlight that even a small reduction in percentage of body fat can yield significant health benefits, especially for individuals in the obese category.
Upon the completion of your scan, results are swiftly accessible on the technologists’ computer. They will guide you through the findings and explain each page. For an even more convenient experience, if you have an account set up on the Jevitty App and the technologist uploads your report, you can promptly view and access the results within the application. In cases where you don’t have a smartphone or require a digital copy, a secure link will be provided for delivery to your designated email address.
While a secure link will be provided for email delivery, it’s important to note that, despite our efforts, Bodycomp Imaging cannot offer absolute assurance against potential cybersecurity risks such as hacking or phishing. Bodycomp Imaging is not liable for any issues arising from these risks.

Unfortunately, we have phased out the Bodycomp Portal, we have switched to the Jevitty App. Feel free to take a look online here. For the Android version here, and the iOS here.
Note: Some users may have been given the link app.jevitty.com; apologies we do not use that link. Please head onto your App Store (i.e. Apple App Store, Google Play Store) to download the latest version of the Jevitty App.
There are multiple possibilities on why this is the case.
1.) Different E-mail from Account: Typically, customers provide an e-mail to the technologist that’s different than the e-mail that is used to sign up. (i.e. Apple ID SSO Sign In sometimes creates an alternative e-mail other than the username. Facebook may also have an outdated e-mail that you may not remember using.)
2.) E-mail not Linking Up: Sometimes, e-mail(s) can be typed incorrectly. And the app will not sync with your account. Typically, this will require contacting support@jevitty.com to ensure there are no typos.
3.) Late or Missed Upload: Due to technologists sometimes having back to back clients. They may not be able to upload all scans at real time and may need to upload later on. Sometimes they may have missed report(s).
4.) Name Changes: Some customers may have changed their names during their Booking and have provided an old e-mail or name. Our technologist may continue uploading the clients’ older information and be oblivious. Therefore, please let us know if there is a name change and we can make that ASAP for you. All accounts created with an old e-mail should be deleted and a new one should be created. Please inform our technologists before deleting your old account.
5.) Expired Account or Expired Login: Note that in any mobile application may log you out after being idle for a while. Any “token” related errors require you to log out of the application and sign back in. An expired account will require you to subscribe to a monthly or annual subscription.
